Announcements

Aktion Club Pride

Kristy is proud of the Aktion Club for independently coming up with their own fund-raising project. On March 15, from 11:45 to 12:45, they will be holding a St. Patrick's Day Ice Cream Social and New Membership Drive at Diverse Options. They will be serving ice cream to the consumers and staff of Diverse Options. They are accepting $1 donations to pay for the supplies and hope to add new members for this upcoming year.

Ripon Chamber Business Connection

Congratulations to Mary Tamblin, Nooner and owner of The Center for Creative Healing, for sponsoring a Ripon Chamber of Commerce Business Connection today.

Interclub Opportunities

Monday, March 15, we need one more Kiwanian to do an interclub to our Aktion Club ice cream social at 11:45 at Diverse Options. Tonya, Kristy and Rich are planning on going, so we'll need one more to make it official.

Saturday, March 20, 12:30 to 3:30 p.m., KI President Paul Palazzolo – Club Excellence Summit will be held at the Fox Valley Technical College Room E130. Cost is $2 per person or $10 per club and the Deadline is March 11!

The West Bend Kiwanis Germanfest on Tuesday, March 30. Cocktails at 6 p.m and dinner at 7 p.m. Deadline for reservations is March 25th.

Please let Rich know if you can attend any of these events.

Happy Bucks

Tonya Alling is happy that Brian Wells, from Ripon Arear Roofing, came to the Kiwanis meeting today.

Kristy Sadlon is happy that her parents are home safe from their cruise again because another cruise ship was bombarded with huge waves the same week.

Henrik Schatzinger is happy to be at the meeting after a brief break and he thinks his sleep deprivation is improving his mood today.

John Olson was just very happy today.

Rich Scamehorn was happy to have a great conversation on the phone with his grandson about how fulfilling it is to be a K Kids member and what service project he is working on.

The Love of Servant Leadership

Kristy Sadlon’s eight-year-old son, Lyshon, personally asked club members for donations (instead of having mom do it for him) to support the American Heart Association. The PTO at Barlow Park Elementary is hosting an event this Thursday, March 11th called “Jump Rope for Heart” to benefit the American Heart Association. The children jump rope and learn about their hearts while raising money for kids with special hearts.

Lyshon greatly appreciated the $39.10 he raised and it was a great learning experience for him to raise money for a cause like Kiwanis does. Additionally, the more money the children raise, the more gift certificates the school will receive for physical education equipment. Congratulations Lyshon!

Queen of Spades 50/50 Raffle

$260 was in the pot and Tonya’s number was drawn (thanks Jolene!). She pulled a 10 of Hearts and won $10. Congratulations! There are now 29 cards left and the Queen is still hiding.

Today’s Program: Newly retired Ripon officer, Chris Steiber

Chris Steiber, a newly retired Ripon Police officer, hung up his gun after 32 years of serving this fine Ripon community as of February 5th. Right out of college in July 1978, with absolutely no training, he expected to work in a large city. His first job offer was at the Ripon Police Department and he took it. On his first day he was given a gun, even though he had never shot one before. The technology process was so slow using magnetic strips to communicate with Madison that he had to let some criminals go. Now, all of the new officers must have field training, attend a recruit school and use advanced technology.

He has enjoyed serving Ripon so much because he has three great daughters that grew up in the Ripon School District. He adapted to the community and people and made Ripon his home. He feels rewarded to be part of the community.

His worst memory as a police officer in Ripon was the tragic murder of Dawn Moore on Hall Street. Not only because of the nature of the scene but because of the small boy that has to experience life without a family. His best memory was when he was on a foot chase in town, after tackling his suspect he noticed red all over himself and the suspect so he thought the worst and thought it was blood. He then noticed they were in a tomato patch and they were full of crushed tomatoes! He had to draw his gun a few times in his career but the majority of the time it was to kill rats, deer and even an injured exotic bird.

He is now enjoying his retirement and continuing to substitute teach at the Ripon Middle School. He plans to work at Lawsonia in the summer and take the next year off to kick back and relax.
