2010 Ripon High School Scholarship Night
Tonya Alling presented $500 Ripon Noon Kiwanis Club scholarships to seven very deserving young ladies on Wednesday, June 19. Each of these students are Key Club members who logged between 140 and 160 hours of community service, excelled academically and were involved in many extracurricular activities. In addition, Ashley Himebaugh, a 4-year Key Club member who has served as both vice-president and president received a $500 matching scholarship from the Wisconsin-Upper Michigan Kiwanis District Foundation. Congratulations ladies!

International Convention Update
The board of directors held a meeting last week before our regular noon meeting to discuss exceeding the budget to pay for all expenses to send a member of our club to the Kiwanis International Convention, June 24 through 28. With a motion by Paul and a second by Herm, the board voted unanimously "to find the funds necessary to send a representative to the Kiwanis International Convention and to determine later how to balance the budget." Club secretary Kristy Sadlon will be our delegate this year. We hope to use excess revenue from the 50/50 raffles and to move our gifts to the WI-UM KDF and the International Foundation out of the administrative side of the budget and into the foundation side of our budget. Those two things should get us close to our goal, but if you'd like to make a donation it would be very much appreciated. It's been years since we had a member attend the KI convention.

Relay for Life
Mother Bunny Marge Burling announced that the Relay for Life will be themed Hawaiian style. She encourages us to sell Luminaries, invite other survivors to the survivor walk and to continue raising money for the American Cancer Society.

Ripon Summer Players
Volunteers are needed on Friday and Saturday June 4-5 from 6:30 to 7:30 and on Sunday June 6th from 1-2. Please contact Norm or Helga if you are available to sell tickets for Twelve Angry Jurors.

Tim Scottberg stands with several potential members of the Ripon Middle School Builders Club.

Builders Club
The Ripon Middle School Builders Club held an informational meeting for students on Thursday, May 20, under the guidance of RMS teacher (and our newest Noon Kiwanian) Tim Scottberg. Our goal is to send in the charter paperwork soon and to start the club up in earnest right away in the fall. Mr Scottberg already has the idea to plant a vegetable garden, with the harvest donated to the food pantry.

Ripon Noon Kiwanis Variety Show
The Variety Show theme is “Forever Young”. The show will be held on Tuesday and Thursday, June 1 and 3 at Ripon High School. You can help by acting in a skit. You can help by selling tickets and posting posters to publicize.  We'll need the help of many to entertain our town with a good show. Practice schedule for chorus is: Thursday, May 27, 6:30 pm, Immanuel UMC.

Birthdays: Norm Loomer, May 28; Emily Dinegan, May 29.

Thank You to Kristy Sadlon and Tonya Alling for filling in for Norm on this edition of the Noon News.

Kiwanians "Caught in the Act" of Community Service

Ripon Noon Kiwanians, Ripon Early Bird Kiwanians, Ripon Aktioneers and Rotarians joined together on May 1 to clean up the Little White Schoolhouse. The joint effort was so successful that we're putting our heads together to plan a picnic for all to attend.

Kristy Sadlon and Carol Thome take a break together at the Bowling with Friends day at Plaza Bowl on May 2. It was a joint effort of the Noon Kiwanis, the Early Bird Kiwanis and the Ripon Aktion Club. Bowling with Friends is a party for adults with developmental disabilities who are served by Diverse Options, Inc.

The Ripon Noon Kiwanis garden at Murray Park is well on its way to being beautiful. Bill Neill, Marge Burling and Norm Loomer worked hard last week planting, weeding and watering. Thank you for all your hard work!

A special thank you to Paul Nulton for hosting our May 25 meeting at Immanuel United Methodist Church, to Barb Evensen for bringing a salad, and to Tonya Alling for bringing beverages.

Happy Bucks

Herm Leitz is happy because he was Tonya’s date over the weekend at Green Lake's prom (where the two of them "rescued" the Central Park themed prom set at midnight to use in the variety show.

Norm Loomer is happy because the Memorial Service for his mom and dad over the weekend in Green Bay went well and he was able to spend time with his family.

Kristy Sadlon is happy that her son participated in the 4th Annual DreamCatchers Softball Game in FDL over the weekend for disabled children. He is also a member of the Ripon 8U Traveling Team and they had their first scrimmage at Beaver Dam last week and they were awesome!!!

Tonya Alling is happy because yesterday Ian Stepleton informed her that someone had discovered a stack of documents from the Noon Kiwanis Club from years ago. She is also happy that the City Council approved the Road Run road closures. Finally, her daughter, Megan was Tinkerbell in the play Peter Pan and she was also on prom court over the weekend.

Queen of Spades 50/50 Raffle

Herm Leitz’s number was called and he drew an Ace of Diamonds. Better luck next time Herm! 19 cards are left in the deck and the pot starts next week at $339.50! It's getting up there folks. Come to the meetings and take a chance at winning!

Today’s Program:
Franklin Cumberbatch on Boca Grande and Granite Broadband

Boca Grande has been in Ripon for three years now. Roadhouse Pizza remodeling is their current project. This project created over 50 construction jobs for Ripon. The first phase of the construction should be done around June 10th. They will then start on phase two which should be done around mid-July. These renovations will expand the restaurant to seat four times the customers that it does now.

The next project will be renovating buildings 205, 207 and 209 on Watson Street. They have found that some of the apartments have been vacant since 1937 according to old newspapers found laying on the floor. The goal of Boca Grande is to “renovate the properties they own to last another 100 years.” Also, they are working with Larry Trotter to get the occupants of the American House moved to their new building so they can start working on the new Ripon Inn and Spa.

Regarding Granite Broadband, any visitor that visits downtown Ripon will have access to WIFI. The lowest speed is free and there are daily, weekly, and monthly packages for higher speeds. There is not one small community in all of Wisconsin that can say they offer this. One goal is to offer a marketing opportunity to the downtown businesses who may offer specials on the wi-fi access. “Ripon On Air” is the moniker which will pop up on your laptop or smartphone when you're in range of the wireless feed.

So, what is next? The entire city of Ripon will be covered by wireless internet. Frank stated, “this was never a real estate project, it is an economic development way of bringing more dollars to Ripon.” His office is at 305 Watson Street, and his desk is located right near the front window, if you have any questions, comments or concerns about any of the projects.
