Relay for Life
Relay For Life was held on Friday and Saturday June 11 and 12. Mother Bunny, Marge Burling reported that this year, the “Energizer Bunnies” team raised $2279 for Relay For life and the entire Ripon event raised over $68,000. The highlight of the entire event was the luminaries that lined the relay path and turned complete darkness into light. Great Job Energizer Bunnies!

Relay for Life Bike Relay
Out of the 20 participants in the Relay for Life Bike Relay, five were Noon Kiwanians. They were: Kristy, Tonya, Rick, Cory and Jolene. Great job!

Doug Lyke 5K Sunrise Run
There are many empty spots that need to be filled for this Road Run event to be successful, especially road guards. The event will be held on Saturday June 19, 2010; please contact Herm Lietz if interested. FYI, he will be assigning Nooners if there is a shortfall!

Kids from Wisconsin
The Kids will be here on Tuesday, June 29. We need you to sell tickets in order to make a profit on this event. It costs around $5000 to bring them here, and we need over 400 audience members just to break even. We also are planning an ice cream social during intermission. Aktion Club members will be invited to pass out programs and take tickets. If you can help in any way with the ice cream social, please contact Barb Evensen. This could either make or break our annual budget.

Happy Bucks

Lindsey Michels is happy she ran in a five-mile race at Walleye Weekend and ran her personal best time.

Richard Zimman is happy he has never had to run in a race.

Steve Sorenson is happy that this is his 37th year involved with Badger Boys and that his good friend Charles Wiley is here to speak to our club.

Herm Lietz is happy he runs every morning out of town with his shirt off because he recently received a phone call from our friendly Town of Ripon officer explaining to him a complaint was made because he does not wear a reflecting jacket for safety.

Tonya Alling is happy because she took her daughter Megan to UW-Stout for summer orientation and registration.

Queen of Spades 50/50 Raffle

The pot grew to $373 and Steve Sorenson’s ticket was pulled. He drew a five of clubs which means he won $5. Congratulations Steve! Next week, the pot will start at $368 and there are 16 cards left, with the queen and one five still hiding -- the next lucky person has a 12.5 percent chance of winning at least $5 and a 6.25 percent chance of drawing the Queen!

Today’s Program: Journalist Charles Wiley

When introducing our program speaker, Steve Sorenson called Charles Wiley a "living legend”. Charles is a regular speaker for our club during Badger Boys week and has political and social perspectives on world events.

Charles’ current mission in life is to get today’s children to realize the true meaning of Independence Day. Many children know this great holiday as July 4th and fireworks; they don’t have a clue that Independence Day is actually the celebration for the birth of our country.

He feels the news media seems to have more influence than the President, and political figures react to that. He urges everyone to have “as many sources as possible to get the true accurate story from ALL perspectives”. The media thrives on bad news! Many of the Y2K guru’s looked real foolish when nothing happened after all of the hype of the world ending and planning for disaster.

“The era of close neighbors is over” stated Charles. This is different for Ripon, but in larger cities . . . people are no longer friendly neighbors. Back in the day, he remembers knowing all of his neighbor’s names and their children within a couple of weeks. Now, “nobody knows anybody anymore”. He feels the only thing that keeps communities together are clubs like Kiwanis. Every club in America is fighting for new members to join their service club and many are failing. Many kids these days don’t have a clue about all of the good deeds we do and what our clubs stand for. He states, “if you think about it, there are no political figures today that have pointed out the problem of lacking service club memberships”.

Note: I apologize for the delay in getting this edition out the door. On the bright side, you can look forward to reading two issues over a three-day period. - Tonya
