Happy Bucks

Sue Meyer is happy for the help she had from Kiwanians Paul Nulton, Lindsey Michels and Tonya Alling spreading six yards of mulch at Dr. Robert Meyer's home last week. Doc is a 56-year member of our Kiwanis club.

Rich Scamehorn is happy about having their entire extended family at their cottage over the weekend and he's happy for Paul and Shelly's upcoming month-long trip to India.

Tonya is happy to have helped at the Green Lake American Legion's pancake breakfast and at their Sink the Bismarck fundraiser on Independence Day.

Gary Ring is happy to be bringing the "Yell and Tell" program to our club today.

Queen of Spades 50/50 Raffle

The pot grew to $402 and Tonya Alling’s ticket was drawn by Gary Ring. She drew a lowly two. Next week, the pot will start at $402 and there are 13 cards left, with the queen and one five still hiding! You've got to play to win, so come to the next meeting for your chance at over $400!

Today’s Program: Yell and Tell

Gary Ring gave us a great demonstration of the Yell and Tell curriculum, a Kiwanis-sponsored program aimed at teaching young children how to recognize danger and get help.

The vision of the Yell and Tell program: Young children will know to Yell and Tell if they find themselves observing a dangerous situation. Children, when taught at a young age to be proactive, may carry this attitude throughout their lives.

The program's mission: Children's lives will be saved by the child who sees a dangerous situation and takes a proactive response. This is an easy to learn four-step program:
See It (See something that is dangerous)
Feel It (Scared, doesn't know what to do)
Yell (Yell HELP to attact attention)
Tell (Tell the closest adult)

The curriculum covers five dangerous situations a child might observe: water, fire, poisons, guns and child enticement.

The three Fond du Lac Kiwanis Clubs joined together to do a pilot program at a Baptist school this year, teaching nine children. Next school year, they will teach the program in one first grade class at Roberts School, and if that is a success, the program will expand to all Fond du Lac schools, with approximately 500 students learning about Yell and Tell annually.

Paul Nulton, who is arriving in India as I type this, picked up two parts of the curriculum to take with him to the orphanage and school he will be teaching at for a month. Jean Davidson, the founder of the Yell and Tell program (and the granddaughter of Harley-Davidson's founder) was thrilled to have the program expanding into India and left materials for Paul to pick up at her Milwaukee home. When he returns, perhaps our club can implement the Yell and Tell program in our schools, with the assistance of the Key Club.
