Jennifer Oppor was the guest of her mom, Melanie Oppor.

Charles Wiley was our speaker.

Announcements

Relay for Life Raises over $80,000
Mother Bunny Marge Burling reported that our Energizer Bunny Relay for Life team raised about $1,800. About ten Noon Kiwanians participated by raising money or walking through the rainy night.

Doug Lyke Road Runs
The Ripon Noon Kiwanis Doug Lyke Sunrise Run was held on Saturday, June 18 at 7:30 a.m. Many faithful Noon Kiwanians volunteered to help. Thank you all for your service to the club and to the children in our community and beyond. See next week's Noon News issue for photos and a full report on the results of the run.

Kids from Wisconsin
The Kids are coming to Ripon on Tuesday, June 28. Each member should have received 10 tickets, which you are expected to either sell or purchase. It costs nearly $5,000 to bring the Kids to Ripon, and we historically just barely break even, so every ticket sale counts. Herm will need help scooping ice cream for the ice cream social held during intermission. We will also need help with ticket sellers/takers the night of the concert. The Aktion Club has been invited to hand out programs. This is one of our all hands on deck events, so please mark your calendars and contact Barb Evensen, Paul Nulton or Herm Leitz if you can help.

Aktion Club Brat Fry – Sunday, July 17
The Aktion Club will hold its second annual brat fry to raise funds to purchase fleece blanket material for their ongoing service project. The blankets are donated to homeless Wisconsin veterans and to medical facilities and assisted living facilities for those in need. We are looking for someone to help organize the brat fry. If you are up for it, please contact Paul or Kristy.

Happy Bucks

Henrik Schatzinger was happy to have "popped the question" to Jolene Rueden while they were vacationing recently. Jolene gave a happy buck because she "said yes". Bill Neill is happy for both of the love birds!

Marge Burling was happy not to have to water the Kiwanis flower garden at Murray Park due to the rain.

Melanie Oppor was happy to have her daughter Jennifer at the meeting.

Linda Putzer was happy for her son's participation on the RHS baseball lteam, which won the state-semi finals and was destined for victory in the Wisconsin State Division 2 Baseball Tournament.

Peggy Hutchings was happy that her daughter, Amy, has her first summer job working at Sodexo during the Badger Boys week and that they extended her a job offer for the duration of the summer.

Steve Sorenson was happy to have walked for several hours for our Relay for Life team. The shirts were soaking wet after sitting out in the rain, so Steve laundered the shirts and now they are all child-sized (editor's note: that's taking serving the children of the world too far, Steve). Steve reported that he lost his sister and his father to cancer and that his mother is a five-year cancer survivor, so the Relay for Life is a very meaningful way that he can honor their lives. In Steve's words, "keep up the walking -- it really does matter." Steve also gave a happy buck for Charles Wiley.

Queen of Spades 50/50 Raffle

Linda Putzer's ticket was drawn and with $99 in the pot, she drew the three of diamonds, winning nothing. Next week's pot starts at $99 with 40 cards left in the deck and six winners, including the Queen of Spades, still in hiding.

Today’s Program: Charles Wiley

Charles Wiley gave a thought-provoking report on how the media's reporting affects public opinion and national policy. He asserted that "the news media scares people time after time by making a propaganda point". His talk was filled with many examples to back up his key points, many of which are not referenced in this article (primarily because this writer couldn't keep up with the volume of information).

Regarding the rhetoric of violence which was a popular topic immediately following Congresswoman Gabriel Gifford's attack, Wiley had this to say: "there has been a prevalence of violence in our daily rhetoric for decades and it has only become a hot topic because the media chose to put that spin on it." Wiley referenced President Obama saying "if the Republicans get elected there is going to be hand-to-hand combat in Congress." CNN's John King apologized publicly that one of his guests said that one of the candidates is "in the crosshairs."

Wiley feels that we have, for decades, used a rhetoric of violence in daily life, to include sudden death overtime in soccer or a hit and run play in baseball.

Juan Williams was fired from National Public Radio for saying that he would be nervous on an airplane if a Muslim began praying mid-flight.

Charles Wiley feels that we are "still going through this nonsense on a regular basis." He continued by saying that this is "silly talk."

When Lyndon B. Johnson was president, a commonly heard phrase was "LBJ, LBJ, how many babies did you murder today." From a historical standpoint, Aaron Burr shot and killed Alexander Hamilton. So called "hate speech" has been around for decades but no one will stand up and say enough. The flip side to the equation is that there is no more free speech if you limit hate speech. So who decides what is hate speech?

Regarding the media controlling public policy, Wiley referred to our country's policy on hijacked airplanes. For 40 years, the policy of the USA was to allow hijackers to control the aircraft and to disallow passengers or crew to resist. For those decades, the media never cried foul or put a political spin on that policy. Clearly, 911 changed public opinion, in large part due to the media coverage.

Popular rapper Kanye West has released a very popular music video to accompany his hit song on the album "Monster" which subject is necrophilia -- having sex with the deceased. Young people have become desensitized to the rhetoric of violence.

Wiley asserted that "the culture just gets worse and worse and worse." Youth and young adults are desensitized to content like this. He finished by saying "they have no idea of the degradation they are putting their country into."

Whether you agree with him or not, one thing is for sure, we always look forward to hearing Charles Wiley's take on the media when he speaks to our Kiwanis Club each year during the week of Badger Boys State.
